Dangers of obesity

Obesity can have a detrimental emotional and psychological impact, which can be particularly distressing if the initial overeating occurred as a result of feeling low. Being obese can make a person feel unattractive and reduce their self-esteem, making it harder to put in the effort required to lose weight. More urgently, however, obesity can have a serious impact on health and dramatically reduce life expectancy.

Heart disease, cardiac arrest and strokes can occur when a fat begins to build up in the body. A build up of fat in the arteries can also restrict blood flow and have a variety of ramifications for different bodily organs; including increasing the risk of liver failure. Obesity is the most common cause of high blood pressure, and this can be particularly problematic for pregnant women.

Type 2 diabetes is common in obese people, and occurs after various types of cells have already become worn out and stopped working. Damage to other cells, as a result of obesity, can also result in the production of hormones which encourage the development of cancer cells. This can put obese people at greater risk of cancers of the colon, esophagus and kidneys.

Gallstones, gout and varicose veins are all potentially painful conditions that can occur as a result of being overweight and which require medical intervention. Other non-life-threatening conditions include Urinary Stress Incontinence, osteoarthritis and irregular periods.
