Obesity Treatment

Diets, exercises, weight-loss pills, plastic surgery. Their pros and contras.

As obesity is fast becoming a real social problem, official bodies like the FDA have turned their attentions to assessing the root causes of the problem and developing new treatments. At present, the most effective treatments include diet therapy, behavioural therapy, exercise, surgery and weight loss drugs such as Phentermine.

Initially, a program of exercise and diet and behavioural therapy are recommended for a period of at least six months.

Diet therapy consists of exercise and calorie-intake reduction. The central concern is the ability to maintain the program and continue to lose weight – even if the weight is being lost incredibly slowly. Diet therapy works on the basis of utlising calories and ensuring that they are consumed at the rate at which they are being used. A well though-out aerobic exercise program can yield results without any changes in diet having been made. For many, this is a good place to start, with changes in diet coming later. Exercise programs should be previously discussed with a GP, particularly those for obese people.

Behavioural therapy amounts to tackling the problem at source. There are simple changes in lifestyle and activities that can be taken up which will greatly increase the chances of maintaining the new diet program. Weight loss support groups and some forms of talking therapy are known to be beneficial, and is also makes sense to try and ascertain the stimulus which usually encourages the overeating.

If a program of diet and behavioural therapy has been tried for six months without any real success, weight loss drugs may be prescribed. Weight loss drugs include appetite-suppressants and drugs which inhibit the absorption of fat from the intestines.
